The classic American amplifiers of the ‘50s and ‘60s inspired us to create the, errrrr, American Classic series. The Ceriatone 5F6-A amplifier is based on the tweed-covered amplifier of the same designation.  This amplifier was made in the ‘50s, and was available as a 4x10” combo.  This is, in our opinion, perhaps the most important amplifier ever produced, as it served as the foundation of a specific British company that forever changed the sound of music with the JTM45 amplifier.

The 5F6-A is different in topology than our other American Classics.  It uses a single 5AR4 / GZ34 rectifier with a pair of 6L6 tubes for around 30-35W, depending on your selection of output and rectifier tubes.  The preamp and tonestack are also different, and in particular laid the foundation for Treble-Middle-Bass tonestacks that came after. The use of the quad of 10” speakers lent a signature flavor to the sound, and we recommend pairing it with one for authentic 5F6-A tones.  Speaker configurations aside, you’ll find this amplifier is very similar to the JTM45, and can be made even more so by substituting a 12AX7 for V1.

Like other Ceriatone amps, we have labored carefully to select the finest components to suit the design, and the 5F6-A uses our specially designed custom transformers for superior reliability, frequency response, and feel.

This is my fourth Ceriatone amp and the only one of the bunch that I built. Having never done one before, I was apprehensive; however, Nik patiently answered every question promptly (does he ever sleep?). Because I knew I would have difficulty troubleshooting any problem, I moved slowly and methodically, checking each route as I made them.

When I turned it on for the first time and didn't hear the traditional 60-cycle hum, my heart sank. I went ahead and plugged in, and that's when I realized what I was not hearing was an extremely low noise floor, probably the lowest I've ever experienced. Then came the tones. Everything Robbie says above in his review is spot on. Glorious, glassy Fender cleans to down-and-dirty Texas blues and then some. I own a '65 Fender Deluxe Review Reissue, my first and only Fender, but have never been happy getting that classic, Fender shimmer. But the Bassman absolutely nails it. Go figure.

When you jumper the channels you get an incredible tonal palate. The wides frequency response of any guitar amp I've ever played. The best parts of a marshall and fender combined. Perfect clean tones. Takes pedals very well. Paired with a GA-SC64 speaker and got the best O/D tone I could want. VERY loud- have not driven this amp to break-up... would be deafening... Plays cleanly over loud drummer and band and stays very clean. If you purchase this amp do not assume the treble/middle/bass knobs represent a departure from uncolored territory. Play with the amp and learn what sounds best. I typically run it with bass and mid at 3 and treble at about 10.. still sounds very meaty/warm but with bite.. turning the treble up any further gets into ice-pick territory. Very transparent and unforgiving- responds well to dynamics.. Ceriatone did a great job with this amp - very satisfied.
